What is GATE?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

About GATE

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is basically an examination on the comprehensive understanding of the candidates in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science. GATE 2019 will be conducted for 24 subjects (also referred to as “papers”) and it would be distributed over 2nd, 3rd, 9th & 10th of February 2019. The GATE examination centres are spread in different cities across India, as well as, in six cities outside india. The examination would be purely a Computer Based Test (CBT).The GATE score would reflect the relative performance level of the candidate in a particular subject, which is quantified based on the several years of examination data. Note that the GATE 2019 score is valid for THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of the results.


  • M.Tech/M.S./ M.E. – Candidates on qualifying GATE, get a financial aid of 12400/- per month in the form of UGC scholarship.
  • PhD. – Candidates with keen interest in Research and Development can also opt for PhD from IITs/NITs and various other reputed institutions.
  • PGDM/PGDIE -Students interested in management can swing in the management line by pursuing a PG Diploma of 2 years in Industrial Engineering..
  • Several reputed PSUs and research organizations recruit on basis of GATE Score. i.e. IOCL, NTPC, BHEL, HPCL, BARC etc.
  • Teaching: Professor, Asst. Professor at IITs, NITs, reputed educational institutes etc.
  • Junior Research Fellow: ISRO, DRDO, BARC, CSIR, IITs etc.
  • Career in Research & Development
  • Many renowned private firms shortlist candidates for personal interview based on the GATE score.
  • A good number of universities abroad also select the candidates on the basis of the GATE score for their M.S or PhD programmes.

Eligibility Criteria for GATE

  • Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc./Diploma in Engineering/ Technology) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders in Architecture (Five years course) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders of Four-year program in Science (B.S.) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Holders of Four-year Integrated Master’s degree (Post B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology and those who are in the second or higher year of such programs.
  • Holders of Five-year Integrated Master’s degree or Dual Degree in Engineering/Technology and those who are in the fourth or higher year of such programs.
  • Holders of Five-year integrated M.Sc. or Five-year integrated B.Sc./M.Sc. degree and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE/ MHRD as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A of AMIE or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.


Exam Schedule

Exam Schedule and Notification for GATE – 2020 will be coming in the month of September,2020.

GATE Exam will conduct in the month of February.(e.g.1st and 2nd weekends of February)

The Question Paper Consist of  Multiple Choice Questions(MCQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT).

33% Negative Marking in MCQs.

GATE-2019 Application Fees

  • General Category Candidates had to pay an amount of Rs 1500.
  • Candidates had to pay an amount of Rs 750 in case of Category change from SC/ST to Gen/OBC (not applicable for Female and PwD candidates).
  • Candidates had to pay an amount of Rs 750 in case of PwD status change from PwD to non-PwD (not applicable for Female and SC/ST candidates)

GATE-2019 Exam at International Centres

GATE international Examination:

GATE 2019 examinations will be conducted in the following cities outside India: Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Dubai (UAE), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Singapore. The application fee for Dubai (UAE) and Singapore centres is US$ 100; and for the remaining, it is US$ 50. Candidates of any nationality can opt for international centres.

  •  Candidates who have obtained/are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India: (i) must have completed or are in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree (duration: at least 4 years) in Engineering/Technology or; (ii) must have completed or are in the final year of their Post Graduate (Master’s) degree (duration: at least 2 years) in any relevant science subject.
  •  For candidates at international centres, ONLY a valid Passport/Government issued ID/College ID/Employee ID will be accepted as the recognized identification.
  •  For Foreign nationals, SC/ST/PWD categories are NOT APPLICABLE.
  •  The session timing at GATE International Centres will be as per their local time and it will be notified well in advance.
  •  The application procedure remains the same for Foreign nationals as that of Indian nationals.
  •  The candidates opting for international examination centres will be contacted only through their e-mail. However, mobile numbers can be used only when the GATE 2019 Organizing Institute intends to communicate important information to them.

Code of Conduct for GATE-2019

All the candidates appearing for GATE 2019 Examination must comply strictly with the following Rules and Regulations:
• Candidates appearing for GATE 2019 examination must carry Admit Card and original valid photo-identity proof inside the examination hall.
• Scribble pads will be provided to the candidates in the examination hall by the invigilators. The same should be used for all rough work. Candidates should write their name and registration number on the scribble pads. The scribble pads must be returned to the invigilators after the end of the examination.
• Carrying mobile phones (even in the switched-off mode), wristwatches and calculators inside the examination hall is strictly prohibited.
• Carrying of any other electronic devices that can be used for communication or for any other purpose, and printed or hand-written textual materials, inside the examination hall is strictly prohibited.
• All means of communication (verbal or otherwise) among the candidates inside the examination hall are strictly prohibited.
• Candidates should not tamper with the computer and the related hardware provided in the examination hall. Candidates found to have tampered with these willfully, will have their candidature cancelled summarily. In addition, appropriate legal action will be initiated against such candidates.
The GATE 2019 candidature of candidates found using unfair means and not in line with the code and ethics of the GATE examination may be cancelled. Their examination will not be evaluated, even if they may have been allowed to complete their examination. In addition, appropriate legal action may be initiated against all such candidates.
